He suggested that artists (not critics) ultimately assign value. Opinion (critical) can be manipulated only temporarily. He used the example of the impressionists. Was it artists who made impressionists so popular/valuable? I think critics and collectors definitely had/have something to do with it. Also, artists can definitely be manipulated by critics.
