The Critical Debate over Inception

Article by A.O. Scott in the NY times about how the critical debate over Inception formed itself (and informed itself) before the movie even opened.

  1. Another list of likes, this time about A.O. Scott's article:
    1. The opener: "Any movie worth seeing is worth arguing about, and any movie worth arguing about is worth seeing." Agreed.

    2. The play-by-play narrative account of critical responses (including himself and random internet people)... This appeals to the drama-loving part of my brain.

    3. How he used this movie to illustrate the current structure of critical debate.

    4. A.O. Scott fulfilled my perception of Elkins' equation (good criticism= art hist + opinion + description). I feel like I know what happened, I know what it's about, and I'm ready to get in on the conversation.

    5. The closer/conclusion.

I'm now planning on seeing this movie and I just put Shutter Island and Momento on my Netflix cue.

  2. Great article. It really points out the power or weakness of critics. He writes his review and then waits to see how his perspective of the movie is received. Will he receive hate mail from the filming community or the movie goers? Smith also points out that sometimes critics are wrong. A film that is bashed by critics sometimes turns out to be a classic. His last paragraph is very interesting,

"But in this case we end up with where we should have started, wondering what the movie is about, what it means, puzzling over symbols and plot points. It’s almost as if we’re all in a movie that’s running backward, like “Memento.” Which was totally overrated. Unless it was a masterpiece. I’m going to have to see it again."

"Memento" was overrated... Unless it was a masterpiece. Great line. Okay who's going to see the movie with me?

  4. I saw Shutter Island and Ghost Writer within a week of one another. You should watch Shutter Island - and then you should watch Ghost Writer - similar attempts with very different results in my opinion.
    But, on another note:
A: how in the hell do you guys hav this much time to post on this blog.
B: who the hell has time to go to the movies these days.
    geesh
I feel like a grandpa - I turn my back and there are a million posts - I can't begin to keep up.
C: for the record, this is the first blog I've ever been apart of - maybe you have your computers set to 'auto response'? Where is that button?

  5. I have the rss feed delivered right to the in box/mail application on my mac, so when new posts are made, I get a little headline with a few lines of text. I don't have any more extra time than you :)

  6. This is my first blog experience too, Sean. I'm trying. Christine, I have no idea how to do that thing. Never heard the term "rss" feed. Will you show me how to do it?
